BACK TO BASICS

The tenets of theatre are ancient primitive.  Man told stories; stories to share an important experience or to explain the unexplainable.  The stories were communal.  The shared experience became rituals.  The stories became myths.  The rituals incorporated dramatization.  The storytellers became shamans, priests and actors.  As society became more sophisticated the stories began to push their ritualistic constraints and theatre was born. The stories of theatre continued to serve a similar purpose to rituals; gods intervening in the lives and passions of humans. At its finest theatre explores the depths of human experience whether dictated by the gods or psychology.  The results can range from hilarious to painful to thought provoking and ultimately to cathartic.  However, at times the theatre of a culture stagnates losing its tenuous connection to the essential impulse to viscerally share.   -  Mark Solari
